São Paulo – This Thursday (24th), Christmas Eve, the vaccination against covid-19 in Mexico and Chile began. Both countries purchased doses of the immunizer produced by Pfizer.

In a ceremony broadcast on television, nurse María Irene Ramírez, 59, was the first person in Latin America to receive the vaccine after the arrival of the drug from the American pharmacist yesterday (23). “It is the best gift I could have received in 2020,” said she, who is the head of nursing at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Hospital Rubén Leñero in Mexico City.

The vaccination campaign against covid-19 began simultaneously in Mexico City, Querétaro and Toluca and the first applications were broadcast live during the press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell stressed that the vaccine is a “very effective mechanism to turn the page on this pandemic that causes us so much pain”. Still, he added that the pandemic “will not end overnight, as it will take several months to be controlled, both in Mexico and the rest of the world.

“That is why we must not let our guard down, we must continue for several months with protective measures, healthy distance, face masks, hand washing etc.”, said the undersecretary, according to the newspaper La Jornada.

Mexico will have vaccines from different pharmaceutical companies. The first to receive it are health professionals who care for patients with covid-19, followed by adults over 65 years of age. The third group will have people with chronic illnesses, and the fourth segment will be made up of teachers from states where they are able to return to face-to-face classes.
