unemployment breaks new record and increases almost 40% in six months

São Paulo – The number of unemployed Brazilians reached 14 million in November, according to the National Household Sample Survey, Pnad Covid, released on Wednesday (23) by IBGE. This is a record in the series, with a 38.6% increase since May, when the survey, which measures the impact of the new coronavirus pandemic on the job market, began. The growth represents another 4 million unemployed Brazilians in six months.

In comparison with October, the 2% increase raised the unemployment rate to 14.2%, also beating the previous high. The variation, however, is not “statistically significant” compared to the previous month, according to IBGE, when the level of unemployment closed at 14.1%. And it indicates stability, despite the higher level. The survey also highlights gender and race inequality in the labor market.

Unemployment has color, gender and age

Among women, the unemployment rate was 17.2%, higher than that of men, which closed at 11.9%. Blacks and browns also represented 16.5% of unemployment, an increase of 0.3 percentage points, compared to whites, with 11.5%, which kept the rate unchanged for the fourth consecutive month. In assessing age, IBGE also identified the highest unemployment rates among young people, from 14 to 29 years old, with 24.2%. The data confirm that unemployment in Brazil has gender, race and age, as pointed out by the monthly bulletin of the Study Group and Monitoring of the Economic Situation (Geace), released by RBA.

And the trend is for even worse results for the beginning of 2021. According to the researchers, the end of the emergency aid should lead more people to look for work. The two regions with the highest percentage of households receiving emergency assistance, North (57%) and Northeast (55.3%), already have the highest unemployment rates in the country. The North region maintained 15.4% of the unemployed, while the Northeast increased from 17.3% in October to 17.8% in November. The level of unemployment in other regions reaches 14.3% in the Southeast, 12 , 2% in the Midwest and 9.3% in the South.

Drop in insulation

The IBGE also indicates that the proportion of people who were severely isolated at home dropped to 11.1%, a total of 23.5 million people. In October, the survey showed that this portion of the population was 26.3 million (12.4%). On the other hand, there was an increase among the total of 221.7 million Brazilians who declared that they did not adopt restrictions to prevent the advance of covid-19.

In all, 10.2 million (4.8%) did not make any restriction measures in November, compared to 9.7 million (4.6%) registered in the previous month. With the relaxation of isolation, the employed population increased to 84.7 million, an increase of 0.6%. The highest increase, 0.3%, since the beginning of the survey, when 84.4 million people had jobs.

Of the total employed population, however, 34.5% are informal workers, according to the survey. Informality has been increasing in the country and, until November, 29.2 million workers did not have a formal contract, an increase of 0.6% in relation to October.

More income, more testing

Highlighted in the previous month’s Pnad Covid, the number of tests to detect coronavirus infection went from 25.7 million, 12.1% of the population, to 28.6 million (13.5%). Of this total, 22.7%, or 6.5 million, tested positive for the disease, compared to 22.4%, (5.7 million), in October. The uneven pattern of access to tests has remained the same. The higher the education and income, the higher the percentage of people who took a test.
