To contain the advance of poverty, Dieese defends revision of the labor and social security reforms

Published

São Paulo – The covid-19 pandemic coupled with the State’s dismantling policies will deepen poverty and misery in Brazil. This is the conclusion of Dieese’s assistant technical director Patrícia Pelatieri, during her participation in a debate entitled “Public Social Security and Working Class”. The event was organized by the National Confederation of Metalworkers of the CUT (CNM / CUT) as part of the activities of the 2021 Virtual World Social Forum.

Patrícia makes a direct relation between the lack of public policies for job and income generation and support for workers during the pandemic by the government of President Jair Bolsonaro with the pension reform, approved at the end of 2019. “Before the pandemic, the data already pointed for that (poverty growth). Now, the feeling of male and female workers will be urgent for a Brazil without misery. It is a national tragedy, this is the real dimension ”, he said.

Miserable country

The expert explained that the social security system has been weakened, and that with the melting of formal jobs, it can become increasingly insignificant. “There is a compensation system. Whoever is in the job market today retains retirees and pensioners. It is a pay-as-you-go system. This format remains even with reforms. This is important because, since Social Security is contributory, what happens in the job market today directly impacts it in the future. ”

“If we could summarize what can happen to workers looking at unemployment, the pandemic and changes in Social Security, it would be the image of misery. There can be a very rapid increase in misery and poverty. Even older people who lose social protection. We can have a country of wretched people, ”continued Patrícia.

Looking to the future

Given the scenario, considered worrying, the president of CNM / CUT, Paulo Cayres, calls on society to keep the fight over Social Security active. “Let workers not give up on Social Security. Depending on how it is, many workers will stop wanting to pay Social Security, thinking only about retirement itself ”, he said.

Paulo warned about the harmful impacts of the dismantling of the State from today’s emergencies. “We have the largest healthcare system in the world. The only one that has a platform capable of vaccinating everyone. They want to destroy. Social security is the largest benefit portfolio in the world as well. We have achieved all that and now they want to destroy. We need to mobilize so that we can reflect on all of this. Fundamentally how to reverse these attacks, ”he said.

Based on this thought, Patrícia called for mobilization around the review of reforms harmful to workers. “Since 2016, there has been a reduction in social protection, a reduction in investments in social areas, a disruption of the labor market, a sluggish economy, low dynamism, all due to the reforms made. Constitutional Amendment 95 – of the Ceiling of Expenses -, labor and social security reforms and privatizations ”, he quoted.

“All of this has led us to a higher concentration of income and weakening (workers’ rights). There is an urgent need to implement expansion and financing of public spending. There are options. We need a tax reform that will raise taxes on the super rich and make it more progressive, immediately remove the spending cap. The scenario is very worrying. We need urgent citizen income. We need to raise the unemployment insurance installments. Stimulate public investment so that the economy returns. We need active labor market policies. We urgently need to renegotiate labor rights, ”he added.
