‘The movement of the leader is to inspire others’

São Paulo – Return to the past, reconstruct the present and change the future. Through this philosophy, Rio rapper Abebe Bikila, known as BK ’, released his third album The Leader in Motion. The work goes beyond the 10 tracks presented, its aim is to create life, inspire transformations and rescue the black protagonism.

One of the main names of the new generation of national rap, BK ’appeared to the public in 2016, with the album Castles & Ruins. Since then, the rapper from Lapa, central zone of Rio, has become a reference for the new artists that have emerged. Despite the weight of this responsibility, the artist celebrates the level reached.

“It has always been one of my life goals, in addition to rap, doing something for the world and being able to inspire people. I lacked reference, so I always wanted to be one ”, she celebrates.

Leader in motion

The Leader in Motion, from BK ’, is one of those ways to inspire and strengthen your community. Its objective, through the work, is to unite and create new leaders, and it brings examples of leadership: the North American activists Malcolm X, Martin Luther King; the Marxist revolutionary from Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara; besides the black Brazilian actor and activist Abdias Nascimento.

“I believe in a person leading, but I also believe in collective exchange, with everyone building a movement together. However, the idea of the disc is the sum of the two. You can have a guy pulling the tram, but with a community around helping and guiding this work ”, defends BK’.

Collective speech

The carioca rapper emerged on the scene with his old group Nectar Gang, in 2015. During this period, his verses were marked by introspection and more individual themes. According to him, maturity and readings, like the socialist philosophers Frantz Fanon and Achille Mbembe, were part of the construction of a more collective discourse in his art.

Better than a wise leader, it’s just a wise people”, Thus exemplifies his vision in the song“ People ”. However, another influence cited by him were the experiences on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. “It is a reading of the world and this situation in which it finds itself, mainly in Rio de Janeiro. Rap has given me a better life, so I don’t need to talk about myself all the time, I better influence other people. I cannot stop at my selfishness ”, he explains.

The inspiration to seek a better world also comes from home. Dona Ana, the artist’s mother, is a teacher and activist in the black movement since she was young. “In fact, when I think of helping the world, it is influenced by my mother. She has this thought in the next and it came from her ”, she adds.

BK´é Bikila

BK ’explains that his name is a way that his mother found to increase this resistance. Abebe Bikila was an Ethiopian marathon runner, considered one of the greatest of all time, after becoming the first man to win two Olympic marathons (1960 and 1964).

For this reason, he even abandoned the artistic pseudonym and decided to sign the album with his registration name. “This record is a rescue record. I talk a lot about the black movement on the album and my mother made this historic rescue in my name. So, as I want to go back to the base, I thought I would marry the idea of the record ”, he said.

Money as resistance

The Leader in Motion is inspired by DAMN, fourth studio album by American rapper Kendrick Lamar, released in 2017. One of the references used was the concept of creating two narrative lines in a single work.

The BK ’album starts with the song“ Movimento ”and ends with“ Universo ”, where the character’s journey begins in the war scenario and ends with calm. However, when listening in reverse order, it is possible to find another meaning. “Backwards and forwards, the character starts preparing for the battle and ends there. And these two things are two possible movements of a leader ”, he sums up.

Throughout the speech, BK ’deals with the construction of the movement, its motivations, also addresses the achievements, but ends with a feeling of material detachment. Your relationship with money also changes. In the song “Porcentos 2”, it shows that capital must revolve around its community: “I don’t spend, I invest / I share and conquer / Consuming us, the money comes back”.

According to the rapper, the money is presented to the black youth as something bad. Although he does not agree with the problems of capitalist exploitation, he says it is necessary to create new relationships with money, to strengthen his community and guarantee a better life for those around him.

“When moving away from money, we also move away from the idea of prosperity. The problem is not the notes, but what is done by them and how capitalism works ”, he says.

Erasmus’s delay

The Leader in Motion it’s a more direct rap record, as BK ’even says. In it, he “spent the pen” with more direct and dry rhymes, involved in a current production, but which refers to the 90s of national rap.

This atmosphere had a strong cast: Jonas Profeta, Nansy Silvz and Deekapz were responsible for the beats, while Arthur Luna, El Lif Beatz, mixed and produced. American Mike Bozzi, who curiously worked with Kendrick Lamar, in DAMN, mastered the album.

“On this album, I really recovered the aesthetics of nineties rap, with a lot of rhyme and scratch from DJ. It’s dry and I did it on purpose. This record is able to talk to the previous generation and the current generation, so I, as a hip-hop lover, saw this need to contribute to the history of culture ”, celebrates.

BK ’reveals that The Leader in Motion would come out in the first half of this year, but there was a slight delay. The “fault” lies with the singer Erasmo Carlos. One of the tracks on the album has a sample of the song “Minha Gente”, by Erasmo, and it was necessary to wait for the release.

“If we let go without letting it all go, I could go for it,” jokes the rapper. He says he did not raise the chance to remove the sample. “I like it a lot because it is the face of music. I didn’t want to take or put someone else singing, I wanted the sample the way it was, with Erasmo’s voice. It added a lot to the idea of music. ”

Evo was overthrown by a coup in November 2019 that brought lawyer and TV presenter Jeanine Áñez to the presidency. With 90% of the official count completed. at 3:40 pm on this Wednesday (21st), Luis Arce approaches 55% of the valid votes. “What was at stake on October 18 was to go back to the past with the privatists or continue to the future with the nationalists,” said Evo Morales in an interview with Breno Altman (watch below).

Asked how the country will recover from the economic crisis aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic, he replied that it will be with the presence of the state. The Bolivian guaranteed that Bolivia will normalize relations with China, Cuba, “some European countries” and Russia. “Those who once asked for market, market, market, now say State, State State, in the face of the pandemic.”

Vaccine against covid-19

“We are going to face the pandemic. When we have the vaccine, we will distribute it to all 11 million Bolivians for free. ” According to him, tackling the pandemic and the crisis will be done through joint work between the federal government, governors and mayors.

In Brazil, President Jair Bolsonaro not only boycotts health policies, but goes further. On Wednesday, he forbade the country to buy the Chinese vaccine CoronaVac, which would have 46 million doses through negotiations with the state of São Paulo announced the day before by the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello. “I don’t give up my authority”, justified the Brazilian’s head of state.

South America

About neighbors in South America, Evo Morales highlighted the “profound ideological and programmatic difference” between MAS and the president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, from Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, and the former Argentine president Mauricio Macri. But it was diplomatic. “Whether it is left or right, we must work together respecting our differences. South Americans cannot be isolated, ”he said.

Morales acknowledged that he may have been mistaken as president. “I was wrong, but I am a human being,” he said. “Now we have experience in public management, and we are going to take Bolivia forward, united, organized.” He affirmed that the new government will make “a pact of union between the parties of the right, businessmen and workers, a great national agreement, to raise the economy”, adding: “The moment is to consolidate our process of change, democracy does not end on election day ”.

Evo has been in Argentina since December 2019, where he went into exile after the coup in the country. He said that the return to his country still has no forecast. In an interview with BBC Brazil, the president-elect was not positive about the possible participation of the ex-president in the new government. “If Evo Morales wants to help us, he will be very welcome. But that does not mean that Morales will be in the government. It will be my government, ”he said.
