Teachers report 209 cases of covid-19 back to school. Doria closes 7 schools

São Paulo – The Union of Teachers of Official Education of the State of São Paulo (Apeoesp) recorded, until yesterday (8), 209 cases of covid-19 among teachers and other workers of state education, in 97 schools in São Paulo. João Doria’s government (PSDB) does not comment on the data collected by the teachers, but closed seven schools this week due to suspected or confirmed cases of covid-19. Teachers have been on strike since yesterday against back to school amid the new coronavirus pandemic, maintaining only remote teaching activities. Tomorrow (10), Apeoesp will hold a popular assembly defending the cancellation of the return to face-to-face classes and the expansion of the vaccination program, with priority for teachers.

State school teachers highlight the strike with a sanitary action, in defense of life and against covid. According to Apeoesp, the schools were not properly structured as the Doria government says. Many of them have not yet completed the reforms. Among the main problems are poor ventilation of the rooms, small spaces, crowding at the entrance and exit from classes, expired gel alcohol, lack of bathrooms, among others. This week, schools can receive up to 35% of students per class.

Covid present

“There are no conditions for a safe return. The schools
do not have the minimum infrastructure. We receive photos and videos at all times
of teachers showing broken bathrooms, accumulated garbage, leaks, alcohol
expired gel. And all of this is already having serious consequences. Imagine what
will happen when millions of students return to face-to-face classes
in the state ”, defended the president of Apeoesp and state deputy, Professor
Bebel (PT). According to her, 15% of teachers joined the strike on the first day.

A survey carried out by Apeoesp indicates that only 5% of students in the state public network of São Paulo returned to face-to-face classes on Monday. For Bebel, this indicates a strong adhesion of families to the health strike decreed by teachers.

“The attendance of students was very low, because families are aware of the risks that exist in schools in the state network. Nobody wants to send their child to a place where there is expired gel alcohol, environments without ventilation, broken bathrooms. Even with a small number of students, there was a crowd at the school doors, which shows the unpreparedness for this return ”, he said.

Parents of students at the Dr. Álvaro de Souza Lima State School, in Jardim São Savério, south of São Paulo, protested yesterday against going back to school in the middle of the pandemic and asked for improvements at the school. Seven classrooms are without electricity, the water tank is empty and the overgrown is taking over the external areas. According to the families, the school has not undergone any intervention by the Doria government to adapt its spaces and guarantee a distance of 1.5 meters between students.
