São Paulo – Teachers from the municipal education network in the city of São Paulo go on strike from tomorrow (10), demanding safe conditions for returning to face-to-face classes and maintaining remote education as long as there is no effective control of the covid pandemic. -19. The decision was unanimous, in the assemblies of teachers’ unions and other education workers in the capital of São Paulo. The resumption of face-to-face classes in the city is scheduled for the 15th. In the state network, teachers started a strike with the same objective last Monday (8), with the Teachers Union in the Official Teaching of the State of São Paulo (Apeoesp) forward.

The workers will leave the motorcade tomorrow (10), at 11 am, from the headquarters of the Municipal Secretariat of Education, in the central region of the city.

Among the movement’s demands is the maintenance of remote education as long as there is no effective control of the covid-19 pandemic. The category also wants more efforts by governments to expand the production and application of vaccines against the new coronavirus. In addition, adapting the calendar back to face-to-face classes to advance the population’s vaccination and restructuring schools to meet health security needs in the midst of the pandemic.

Insecurity

Greater São Paulo has an average of 3,500 new cases of covid-19 per day and 90 daily deaths. The ICU occupancy rate is 65.6%, with an average of 695 new admissions per day.

The proposal of the government of Bruno Covas (PSDB) is that the classrooms receive up to 35% of students in the first weeks. In elementary and high school, students will rotate. In daycare centers and preschools, a fixed group will attend schools every day and will be defined by criteria of social vulnerability.

The president of the Union of Education Professionals in Municipal Education (Sinpeem), Claudio Fonseca, pointed out that many schools have not yet completed the reforms and the number of support professionals is insufficient to carry out the work in the midst of the pandemic. In addition, despite being announced by the government of Mayor Bruno Covas (PSDB), the support structure for education was also not completed.

“The secretariat assured that it would deliver tablets to all students and teachers. Do not delivered. He also said that the equipment of the so-called digital rooms would all be installed. They are not. This prevents hybrid work (face-to-face teaching on some days and remote teaching on others). There was a reduction in cleaning professionals, at a time when we need to guarantee the expansion and a continuous hygiene process in schools. There is also a lack of technical education professionals, which the government has committed to hiring, but has not yet completed the process, ”explained Fonseca.

The president of Sinpeem also stressed that education workers are not against going back to face-to-face classes themselves, but that, at this moment, there is no security to guarantee the health of students, families and teachers, so the strike is necessary.

Irresponsible

“We are living in a time of high contamination. We have vaccines, but it is still necessary to expand the immunization of society. That is why we advocate linking the school calendar to the development of the vaccination calendar. To protect the health and lives of teachers, students, other workers and families, ”said Fonseca.

The president of the Union of Workers in Public Administration and Municipalities in the Municipality of São Paulo (Sindsep), Sergio Antiqueira, who also joined the teachers’ strike, considers the decision to return to school in the face of contamination rates and deaths of patients irresponsible and accused the Covas government to start back to school without an opinion from the Health Surveillance Coordination (Covisa).

“In the city of São Paulo, there is no opinion from Covisa. The decision is not scientific but political, to return to school and let it contaminate. ‘Since everything is open, why not open up education?’. We will have to think about how we make this discussion between ourselves and the workers. We are trying to overcome obscurantism, ”he said.
