São Paulo – Teachers from the state of São Paulo go on strike next Monday (8), against the return to face-to-face classes without security conditions amid the pandemic of covid-19. The category will maintain remote activities. The Union of Teachers of Official Education of the State of São Paulo (Apeoesp) argues that the strike aims to preserve the lives of teachers and other education workers and also denounced that there were 147 cases of covid-19 in 79 schools in the state network in the last days. The workers of the municipal education network decide on Monday to stop in the same way as of the 10th.

“There are no conditions for a safe return. At
schools lack the minimum infrastructure. We receive photos at all times
and videos of teachers showing broken bathrooms, accumulated garbage,
leaks, expired gel alcohol. And all of this is already causing consequences
serious. Apeoesp conducted a survey in which it found 147 cases of
covid-19 in schools. All had some kind of face-to-face activity. imagine
what will happen when millions of students return to classes
in the state ”, defended the president of Apeoesp and deputy
state, Professor Bebel (PT). The meeting was held virtually.

According to her, the union will carry out a series of acts and demonstrations next week to clarify the population on the reasons for the teacher strike. “We want to talk to the population. We will have sound cars all over the state, an enlightenment campaign on social networks, radio and TV, caravans and regional events. In addition, we will go to city halls, talk to mayors and hold meetings with teachers, parents, mothers, students and employees, among other actions, ”said Bebel.

Today, the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), said that the return to school in São Paulo will take place according to the phasing of the São Paulo plan. This means that in Greater São Paulo and in the regions of Araçatuba, Baixada Santista, Campinas, Presidente Prudente and Registro, which are in the yellow phase, up to 70% of students can participate in the activities – who will be forced to return. In other regions, the return of students is optional, with a limit of 35% per classroom. The governor did not comment on the teacher strike.

Teachers and other network workers
municipal education system of São Paulo will decide on the strike next Monday
(8). The category has already declared a strike status and indicated that the strike should
start on the 10th. The unions submitted proposals to the São
Paulo on how to lead back to school amid the covid-19 pandemic, but the
Bruno Covas government rejected the ideas.

This week, the Doria government issued terms of responsibility to the families of students in the state school system in which it is totally exempt from liability if children and adolescents are contaminated by covid-19 in schools. The document places it among the conditions for the student to return to face-to-face classes that, “in case of contamination with covid-19, I will be fully responsible for the necessary care, since the virus circulates in all places and not only at school” .

Reasons for the teacher strike

The first day of planning to return to school for teachers from the São Paulo state network, on Monday (1st), dismantled the advertisements of the Doria government and confirmed the concerns of education workers. Full and poorly ventilated rooms, expired gel alcohol and schools still under renovation were reported in several regions of the state. In addition, the teachers criticized the determination to resume face-to-face planning activities, and the guidance was all through videos, seen on screens or cell phones.

Apeoesp gathered reports from teachers and other
education workers showing some of the problems. Schools in the region of
Tatuí and Rio Claro distributed 70% expired gel alcohol to teachers. At
State School (EE) Valentim Gentil, in Cursino, southeastern region of the capital
São Paulo, the reform of the unit is still in progress. Same situation as EE
Professor José Cardoso, in Rio Claro, where no bathroom would be accessible
to students, if classes returned today, as originally planned.

In Marília, in the interior of São Paulo, teachers report having spent 4 hours in the classroom, with only a fan pointed at the door, because the tilting windows are stuck and do not open. In addition, the use of the fan itself is not recommended, making many rooms extremely hot. “If a fan is already difficult, imagine it without. Now imagine if children and adolescents will respect the rules in these conditions. To spend hours in a mask in such heat? ”Asked a teacher who also asked not to be identified.
