São Paulo – The return to mandatory face-to-face classes, amid the worsening of the covid-19 pandemic in São Paulo, took its first victim: teacher Maria Tereza Miguel Couto de Lourenço, 32, who taught at the state school of time full-time Minister José de Moura Rezende, in Caçapava, in the interior of São Paulo, died as a result of the covid-19, on Saturday (20). Two days earlier, her mother also died. The teacher’s death occurs amid an explosion of cases of covid-19 in public and private schools, contaminating students, teachers and other education workers, days before completing a month of the beginning of the process of resuming activities.

Professor Maria Tereza took part in the back to school planning activities, which started on January 26th. At that time, teachers denounced the high risk of contamination by covid-19: rooms with poor ventilation, some of them crowded, 70% available alcohol gel was expired, many schools were still being renovated and had no bathrooms available, among other problems.

The classes in the state public network started on February 8. In the red and orange quarantine phases, the presence of students is not mandatory. Teachers are obliged to go in any situation.

Since the end of January, the Union of Teachers of Official Education of the State of São Paulo (Apeoesp) has been registering confirmed cases of covid-19 among teachers and other education workers in the public network. According to the organization, there are already 851 confirmed cases in 456 schools. Officially, the government of João Doria (PSDB) registered 741 confirmed cases and 1,133 suspected cases, in public and private networks, until February 17.

The president of Apeoesp, state deputy Professor Bebel (PT), expressed sadness and indignation about the death of Maria Tereza. “How many contagions and how many more deaths will have to occur in order for this insanity to cease in the classroom? Today it was that colleague, tomorrow it could be any teacher, forced to work in schools without structure to guarantee their safety ”, said Bebel.

The Secretary of State for Education, Rossieli Soares,
regretted the teacher’s death, but accused Apeoesp of doing a “political act” with
the case.

“Your folly is killing you, Mr. Secretary. This is more of a lie. Who made the decision to keep schools open was not Apeoesp. And it is not Apeoesp that makes political struggles with human lives. But those who care about the health and life of education professionals are, yes, Apeoesp. Rossieli had countless chances to do it differently. He didn’t do it because he doesn’t have the stature to occupy the position of Secretary of State for Education. Your place will always be the rubbish of history ”, replied Bebel.
