‘Real-life villains manifest themselves more and more’, says director of ‘Bacurau’

São Paulo – Filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, director of one of the greatest achievements of national cinema in the last two years, Bacurau, from 2019, states that the escalation of evil in his films is also a portrait of the years that have passed in the country and in the world. “I started to realize that villains are not just comics or movies and just superheroes. There are villains in real life and they have started to manifest themselves more and more. We arrived at the complete breakdown of the democratic process in Brazil, in 2016. The villains started talking like villains. Then the clown (Donald) Trump became a candidate. And as a candidate he was elected. And he became a real villain. ”

Kleber Mendonça says that all of this leads to the villains of Bacurau. “They are normal people. One works in a penitentiary. Another in the human resources of a supermarket, but they are villains. And I think the idea of the villain’s perversity comes not only from history, but from Brazil that we were looking at. I think there is this difference between Sound Around, Aquarius and Bacurau“, He observes, citing three of his most important films.

The reflections were shared during a virtual meeting held on Thursday night (11), by CineSesc, in partnership with the publishing company Companhia das Letras for the dissemination of the book Three Routes – The Sound Around, Aquarius Restaurant Reviews, Bacurau, launched in December. The conversation, mediated by film critic and screenwriter Viviane Pistache, also had the participation of actress Bárbara Colen, director and screenwriter Juliano Dornelles and actor Thomás Aquino, who worked with Kleber in the productions.

Mia Couto on Brazil: ‘Absence of wrong policies or policies, I don’t know what’s worse’

Scene off the script

Regarding the genesis of the country’s political crisis, he recalls a scene that was not part of the script for his films. It was while recording with his team, of about 100 people, Aquarius, 2016 feature film, in Recife. On the improvised set at Praia de Boa Viagem, among cranes, lighting technicians, makeup artists and a battalion of professionals, a man approached and shouted: Go to work, bunch of motherfuckers! “It was one of the first manifestations that I felt that things were out of tune with the Brazil where I was living a few years before. The first time I thought the weather was going sour. Because after Dilma’s reelection, I started to hear some things that I had stopped listening to, such as prejudice against the Northeast. ”

It was as if the world had been rewinding for 10 or 15 years before, when it seemed that the country had overcome some of its main scourges. Within the period that was born The sound around (2012), the first fiction feature by the Pernambuco director. “I was perhaps a little naive. Or it was the time we lived in. I didn’t think that the plantation master, no matter how much of a bastard and motherfucker he was, was a villain. I didn’t want Clodoaldo, played by Irandhir Santos (in the 2012 film), to be a villain. ”

Banality of violence

Juliano Dornelles also spoke about the lack of perplexity in the face of violence and how they tried to deal with the topic in a more crude and real way in Bacurau. “Many are portraying violence as commonplace. Like going to buy bread. But that is not it. Pulling the gun on someone is borderline. It’s extreme. It is not simple. The effects of violence are important. When you exhibit a tragedy and the result is not built, it is a big problem ”, he comments, criticizing the glamorization of death and the possession of weapons. He recalls that the end of Bacurau it was not a big party or celebration. “There was no forró. There were devastated and sad people. This is a path. We must never forget the devastating effects of violence and the absurd levels that a violent attitude can represent in someone’s life. ”

THE live, which can be accessed on the CineSesc channel, also dealt, for more than two hours, with different aspects in the construction of Kleber Mendonça Filho’s scripts, which in a humane and, therefore, complex way, carries violence, humor and libido for women. screens. “These routes are the result of concerns. In fact, I’m trying to understand Brazil, ”says the director.
