Now online, the Latin American Film Festival of São Paulo can be seen across the country

São Paulo – The 15th Latin American Film Festival in São Paulo begins today (9). The films will be shown until the 16th. The already traditional show in the capital, which is part of the city’s official cultural calendar, will be shown for the first time in a completely online format. The novelty is related to the covid-19 pandemic and was designed to contribute to social distance.

Like the 44th São Paulo International Film Festival, which took place online in October, the advent of the pandemic becomes an opportunity. This is because the films will be available to interested parties anywhere with internet in the country, and not just to the public in the city of São Paulo. Tickets will not be charged.

The festival

There will be 36 films divided into three groups. Contemporary; Contemporary Central America focus; and Tribute BrLab 10 years. All works available for free on three streaming platforms: Looke; Spcine Play; and Sesc Digital.

The event is organized by the Audiovisual Association, Spcine, Sesc São Paulo and the CPFL Institute. In a note, the Association celebrates the possibility of holding the event, even in adverse conditions. “The fundamental characteristics remain: to present the current trends in cinematography in Latin America and the Caribbean, to reveal the new talents of this production and to discuss their future paths.”

Spcine is already sponsoring the event. The president of the public company in São Paulo, filmmaker Laís Bodanzky, reinforces the importance of realization. “This year, the festival will be held entirely online due to the restrictions resulting from the covid-19 pandemic, but this format change will certainly not affect the brightness of this event so important for the audiovisual of the city of São Paulo and of parents.”

The opening is scheduled for 19h. The event will be broadcast on the festival’s YouTube channel. In addition to the films, the program also includes a series of debates. The complete itinerary can be seen here.

The movies

In the first group, Contemporâneo, are the traditional attractions of the festival, which aims to expose Latin American cinema to Brazilians and expand interchange between cultures. “There, recent relevant films are housed, with emphasis on the revelation of new authors from the region. The section excels in geographical coverage, one of the pillars of the festival since its creation ”, says the organization.

Of the 21 films scheduled, five are world premieres and ten are unpublished in Brazil. “In 2020, the 21 titles present represent no less than ten countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela”, adds Laís.

The Central American cinema sector follows the growth of cinema in the region. “In 2020, the festival promotes the Central America Focus, in recognition of the importance of the region’s cinema – which not only grew in number of films produced and new filmmakers revealed, but also became a constant presence in major international events, winning awards and recognition. ”

For the appreciation of film buffs, there will be productions from consolidated industries, such as the Cuban and ascendants, such as the Costa Rican. “Are present in this program August (Cuba / Costa Rica / France) and the following unpublished titles in Brazil: The Countess (Honduras / USA), Attachment (Costa Rica / Chile), From Windward to Sotavento (El Salvador / Mexico) and Dirty River (Costa Rica / Colombia) ”, says the organization.

Finally, a tribute to BrLab, an important audiovisual development laboratory on the continent. “This is an event and an annual laboratory for future films under development and for the training of professionals in the audiovisual sector. Currently, it is the only market event in Brazil that receives projects from all over Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Celebrating its first decade of activities, BrLab prepared, in partnership with the festival, a program with ten outstanding feature films, Brazilian and international, whose projects participated in the initiative. ”
