São Paulo – The president of Nova Central and the National Confederation of Industrial Workers (CNTI), José Calixto Ramos, died yesterday (3), at the age of 92. He was hospitalized in Recife, recovering from complications of the covid-19, but suffered a cardiac arrest. He was from Pernambuco in Ipojuca.

A veteran of the union movement and coming from the metallurgical category, Calixto has commanded Nova Central since the foundation of the entity in 2005. He has chaired the CNTI since 1983.

Created in 1946, CNTI was one of the members of the General Workers’ Command (CGT) from 1962 until the 1964 coup. Subsequently, it went through a period of contestation from the end of the 1970s, with the appearance of the so-called “new unionism” , which contested the official union structure. At the time, its president was Ari Campista, who was replaced by Calixto. First provisionally and then definitively, after his first election in 1985.

After the 1988 Constitution, some categories of the industry formed their own confederations. Today, the entity reports bringing together 39 federations and approximately 630 unions, with about 5 million workers at the base. At the turn of the 1990s, Calixto was also a temporary class minister, by the confederation, at the Superior Labor Court (TST). The class judge mode was extinguished in 1999.

Vaccination plan

Both Nova Central and CNTI decided last week to interrupt all face-to-face activities. “Based on the evidence of the frightening growth in cases of contamination and deaths of valuable personnel,” they say. The entities also defend a national vaccination plan “comprehensive and coordinated”.

“A great companion from decades of struggles in defense of the working class leaves, tireless in his dedication to union protection for male and female workers, in the organization of unionism, in mobilizations, in struggles, in negotiations and in institutional representation. There is a companion who contributed to this Forum and our efforts to unity ”, say, in a note, the presidents of the other members of the Forum of Union Centers (CSB, CTB, CUT, Força and UGT).
