São Paulo – Slum resident, paper picker, black, Carolina Maria de Jesus received the title of doctor Honoris Causa from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The posthumous tribute – she died in 1977, at the age of 62 – was approved last Thursday (25), unanimously, by the University Council of the institution.

An unlikely author, as pointed out by the UFRJ itself. Who wrote with reality, as defined by Clarice Lispector, one of her admirers.

Carolina was “discovered” by journalist Audálio Dantas. He was working on a report on the Canindé slum, on the banks of the Tietê river, in the north of São Paulo. It was there that, in 1958, Audálio discovered the resident who lived “from picking up papers in the trash to sell”. And I had a diary started three years earlier.

“Old frets”

With little formal study, Carolina, called Bitita in childhood, always liked to read. Born in 1914 in Sacramento (MG), near Araxá, she went to São Paulo after her mother’s death. In 1947, he was in Canindé. It became known even outside of Brazil with the launch of the book Dump Room, in 1960. The expression referred to the favela itself, where the poor were, “the old frets”. She had other books published, including posthumous ones.

“A historical repair of the forgetfulness produced about the history of blacks and of remarkable black personalities, as is the case of Carolina de Jesus”, said Professor Vantuil Pereira, from the Center for the Study of Public Policies in Human Rights (Nepp-DH / UFRJ ), about the tribute. “This repair has a didactic role in societies like the Brazilian, which for a long time saw the black in a negative way due to complete historical ignorance,” he added.
