Brazil opened 260 thousand vacancies in January and replaced part of the losses of 2020

São Paulo – Brazil opened 260,353 formal jobs in January, according to data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (Caged), released last Tuesday (16). In the month, the country had 1,527,083 new admissions and 1,266,730 dismissals.

In December last year, the country closed 93,726 vacancies, according to a revised data of 67,900 vacancies originally reported. According to Fausto Augusto Junior, Dieese’s technical director, the generation of jobs is positive, but indicates a reconstitution of what was lost in 2020.

The expert also says that the progress may be slowed due to the worsening of the covid-19 pandemic in recent weeks. “There was a big layoff in December, but also this job reorganization in January. It is a number that indicates a rehiring process in the beginning of 2021. At the end of the year, the feeling was normal and the price we are paying now. We will see to what extent these numbers will be confirmed in March, with the growth of covid-19 and influencing the job market ”, he told the journalist Glauco Faria, gives Current Brazil Radio, this Thursday (18th).

The Caged data considers only job vacancies with a formal contract in Brazil. Given this, Fausto says that the best way is to compare them with the survey carried out by IBGE, which takes informal jobs into account. The country currently has 13.4 million people queuing for work.

“We have to celebrate any positive data regarding employment and, at the same time, we need to look at the economy as a whole, and it is far from having figures to celebrate,” said Dieese’s technical director.

For the specialist, despite the increase in formal jobs, informality remains high in Brazil. “It is a greater vulnerability for informal workers. The groups of workers, at times like this, are left without any type of protection and are forced to face the pandemic, taking risks, because there is no way out. Informally, informal people do not have the protection of Social Security and, in the pandemic, we see the high price of this ”, he said.
