Bolsonaro’s act against the chemical industry can cause 80,000 layoffs

São Paulo – The Bolsonaro government revoked the Special Regime for the Chemical Industry (REIQ), which relieves taxation on the petrochemical sector. The measure, released on Monday (1st), comes into force in July this year and may result in the dismissal of up to 80 thousand workers, as shown by reporter Daiane Ponte in this Thursday’s edition (4), in the Your Newspaper, at TVT.

The special regime zeroed the PIS and Cofins rates for the import of raw materials for the production of the petrochemical industry. With its revocation in July, the sector may lose more than R $ 11 billion in annual revenue, in addition to jobs.

“REIQ was created in 2013, within the context of industry incentives on the Plan Brasil Maior, by the government of Dilma Rousseff. When the Bolsonaro government chooses to end these tax incentives in a sector so important that the chemical industry there is an estimate by the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (Abquim) from a loss of 60 to 80 thousand workers. This has a serious impact on the entire production chain in the midst of an economic crisis, it does not make sense ”, says Douglas Meira Ferreira, Dieese technician in the subsection of CNQ / Fetquim, the Federation of Workers of the Chemical Branch of CUT in the State of São Paulo.
