São Paulo – This Thursday (4), the union centrals are demonstrating throughout Brazil in defense of the emergency aid of R $ 600, employment and vaccination for all. Bank workers also participate in the protests, alongside public school teachers and oil workers. They will take advantage of the mobilizations to also defend public banks, which are being targeted for privatization.

For the president of the Union of Bank Employees of São Paulo, Osasco and Region, Ivone Silva, the vaccination campaign does not advance due to the “irresponsibility” of the Bolsonaro government. “Workers are dying. Frontline bank workers are getting sick and dying, ”he said in an interview with Current Brazil Newspaper.

In addition to the health crisis, Ivone says that public banks have been a constant target of government dismantling actions. “Each day is a different attack.” At Caixa Econômica Federal, she cited, for example, the attempt to privatize the bank’s digital sector, which was transformed into a subsidiary. At Banco do Brasil, the ongoing restructuring plan intends to close 361 branches.

“Banco do Brasil currently finances 67% of the credit for family farming, which is different from agribusiness. In 2020, it was R $ 27 billion. These small farmers are responsible for 70% of the food consumed by Brazilians, ”said Ivone, speaking about bank workers’ protests this Thursday.

To highlight the importance of Banco do Brasil in financing family farming, bank workers will distribute 4,000 kilos of food. The activity, in partnership with the Landless Rural Workers Movement, will take place in front of the BB headquarters on Rua São Bento, in downtown São Paulo, starting at 11 am.

In addition, in partnership with the oil tankers, the union participates in an action of “solidary supply”. There will be raffled among 100 coupons that entitle you to up to 20 liters of gasoline, paying R $ 3.50 per liter, with the union bearing the difference in the amount currently charged.

In addition to face-to-face actions, bank employees also promote a “tweet” at 11 am, in defense of public banks and for the advancement of vaccination in the country. The hastags #BBoBancoDeTodos, # NãoDeixem VendasOBrasil, #VacinaJa will concentrate the virtual demonstrations.
