Banco do Brasil strike begins with police repression in DF

São Paulo – Banco do Brasil employees carry out a 24-hour strike this Wednesday (10) against the closing of branches, the withdrawal of rights and dismissals. A meeting held on Tuesday (9) at the headquarters of the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) with the direction of BB failed. The workers bet on the mobilization of the category to force a new negotiation.

In several parts of the country, the agencies were closed. In the federal capital, during the morning, a group of 200 workers even closed BB’s headquarters, where the central safe is. The bank’s management called the Military Police, which used gas pumps and pepper spray to evacuate the area. Despite the repression, adherence to the strike is about 60% in the entire Plano Piloto, according to the Union of Bank Employees in Brasília.

In São Paulo, workers were also able to close the main safe, which is in the central region of the city. There was no record of police occurrence. Adherence also occurs in several branches, according to the Union of Bank Employees of São Paulo, Osasco and Region, which should publish a balance of activities by the end of the day.

“The strike is important to claim the bank’s respect for us. Especially in this pandemic moment, where everyone is making a Herculean effort to maintain the bank’s activities, generating profit. BB should release another positive result tomorrow. This is the result of the work of the employees, it is not by magic ”, declared the coordinator of the Banco do Brasil Employees Company Committee (CEBB), João Fukunaga.

Dismantling of Banco do Brasil

Announced in January, BB’s “restructuring plan”, which employees classify as “dismantling”, should start to be applied as of today. The plan provides for the voluntary dismissal of 5,000 employees and the closure of 112 branches, 242 service stations and seven offices. In addition, bankers complain about the decommissioning of cashiers and other functions.

It was precisely the end of commissions for clerks who exercise the cash function that caused the end of negotiations that was being brokered by the MPT. The bank even proposed suspending decommissioning for 30 days. However, the proposal was considered insufficient by the workers. Fukunaga also said that BB’s management continues to refuse to say which branches will be closed.

The closure of these branches, according to the director, will hinder the offer of credit to small businesses, further aggravating the unemployment scenario in the country. On the other hand, BB is also responsible for almost all the credit granted to family farmers. As a result, production must be hampered, putting pressure on food prices.

Ana Marta Lima, who is a union leader, participated in the strike in São Paulo. She warned of the importance of the cashiers’ work during the pandemic:

In the capital of Minas Gerais, the president of the BH and Region Bankers Union, Ramon Peres, pointed out that it is public banks that foster the economy in small municipalities. According to the director, there are 970 cities in the country that do not even have a branch of private banks.

Strike and tweeting

In addition to stoppages and face-to-face activities, BB workers are also promoting virtual activities against the dismantling plan. With the hashtags #MeuBBvalemais and #BBparado, bankers intend to raise awareness about the damages resulting from the closure of branches, raising the support of the population. During the morning, the term “Banco do Brasil” accumulated over 12 thousand mentions on Twitter.
