Banco do Brasil bankers approve stoppage for Friday

São Paulo – Banco do Brasil bankers approved, this Tuesday (26th), a strike against the cuts and disassembly promoted by the Jair Bolsonaro government, next Friday (29th). The action was approved at a virtual meeting. Workers criticize the restructuring announced by the bank’s management, which calls for the closing of hundreds of units and the dismissal of thousands of workers.

The director of the São Paulo Bankers’ Union and worker at Banco do Brasil, Adriana Ferreira, said the strike is a response to the federal government. “Once again, in view of the current situation of dismantling and attacks on the rights of employees, the bank employees of the public bank at the Union base reaffirmed their willingness to fight. We will all cross our arms, from agencies or departments, working in person or at home office. Together we are stronger.”

According to Adriana, the union recognizes the serious moment of the coronavirus pandemic, therefore, it will not conduct pickets in all locations, much less agglomerations. “The Bankers’ Union is prepared to provide the necessary support for the strike, but membership must be voluntary and responsible, always wearing masks and respecting social distance,” he added.

Banco do Brasil announced, on the 11th, that it intends to lay off 5,000 employees by the beginning of February and deactivate 361 units, including 112 branches and 242 service stations. In addition to the attack on workers’ rights, which are being removed from their points, with reduced commissions, this dismantling should also affect service to the population.

Fight calendar

Still on Tuesday, a plenary held by union centrals and the Fronts Brasil Popular and Povo sem Medo decided to unite all sectors that defend Bolsonaro’s impeachment, the vaccine and the return of emergency aid.

During the meeting, which had almost 500 members, a schedule of struggles was defined, which begins with the strike at Banco do Brasil and runs until March 8, International Women’s Day. On the 31st, a new motorcade will be held in all municipalities against the President of the Republic.

The vice president of CUT, Vagner Freitas, explained that the difference of the conjuncture of the last months is that conservative sectors also begin to claim “Bolsonaro Outside”. According to him, the departure of the president became necessary for the country to resume its growth.

“Defending Fora Bolsonaro is defending life, employment. He is the great obstacle for the country to get out of the economic crisis. His denial of the disease and his performance in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic prevent the vaccine from reaching everyone, and without a vaccine there will be a paralysis in the economy and an increase in unemployment, ”said Freitas.
