Application handlers earn less and pay PPE out of pocket

São Paulo – During the pandemic, the demand for food delivery services and other products has increased dramatically. However, with the growth of unemployment in other areas and the increase in demand for the role of delivery man, companies such as Ifood, Rappi, among others, have reduced the commission paid per kilometer traveled. Deliverers of these applications have to pay for masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE), which should be distributed by companies.

Delivery man Carlos Alberto Saraiva, lives and works in the Jundiaí region, in the interior of São Paulo. He says he’s been out of work for a week, suspected of contracting covid-19. As a result, without the company’s assistance, his family now lives on the basic food basket distributed by the city.

“We are on the front lines during the pandemic. But we have suffered a lot, because the rates have decreased. It’s not even reaching 70 cents per kilometer. There is a big race, over 15 kilometers, which we earn 11 reais. It is a misery ”, said the delivery man in an interview with Larissa Bohrer, for the Current Brazil Newspaper, this Tuesday (2).

In Jundiaí, for example, hundreds of couriers held two demonstrations to demand better working conditions. One on May 1st, Labor Day, and another on the 30th of the same month.

Social responsability

The director-president of the Ethos Institute, Caio Magri, points out that increasing the exploitation of workers as application deliverers is not part of the good practices of companies that have social responsibility.

“All companies have to permanently guarantee tests to diagnose covid-19, in addition to masks, gloves, alcohol gel, all the necessary protection to be able to work in these conditions. A fair, dignified remuneration that is proportional to the growth registered in your business, in short. It is not at all unreasonable and responsible, nor is it part of the social responsibility of a company, the possibility of exploiting its workers, while they are making exorbitant profits at that moment ”, he declared.

São Paulo – Union centrals will return to the streets next Tuesday (3), for an act in São Paulo, in front of the headquarters of the Central Bank, on Avenida Paulista. On the centrals’ agenda is the maintenance of emergency aid in the amount of R $ 600 and the exemption from payroll so that companies can react to the effects of the pandemic and keep jobs. The demonstration is scheduled for 11am.

The issue of R $ 600 emergency aid has been the subject of a campaign by the exchanges since September, when the government issued Provisional Measure (MP) 1,000. The benefit was extended until December, but the Planalto cut the amount in half, to R $ 300. The opposition in the Chamber and the centrals want the MP to enter the agenda, which has been obstructed for a month. This week, the President of the House, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), said he could include the topic on the agenda.

The maintenance of tax relief for 17 sectors of the economy was vetoed by Jair Bolsonaro. At first, it ends in December. But Congress is mobilizing to overturn the veto. The president of the Senate and Congress, Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP), scheduled for next Wednesday (4) a joint session to analyze presidential vetoes and bills.

Positive for covid

The president of Força Sindical, Miguel Torres, tested positive for covid-19. On video, he said he had no serious symptoms and was breathing normally. Already medicated, he will be quarantined at home. With the confirmation, the manager’s family is conducting tests.
