Application handlers earn less and pay PPE out of pocket

São Paulo – During the pandemic, the demand for food delivery services and other products has increased dramatically. However, with the growth of unemployment in other areas and the increase in demand for the role of delivery man, companies such as Ifood, Rappi, among others, have reduced the commission paid per kilometer traveled. Deliverers of these applications have to pay for masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE), which should be distributed by companies.

Delivery man Carlos Alberto Saraiva, lives and works in the Jundiaí region, in the interior of São Paulo. He says he’s been out of work for a week, suspected of contracting covid-19. As a result, without the company’s assistance, his family now lives on the basic food basket distributed by the city.

“We are on the front lines during the pandemic. But we have suffered a lot, because the rates have decreased. It’s not even reaching 70 cents per kilometer. There is a big race, over 15 kilometers, which we earn 11 reais. It is a misery ”, said the delivery man in an interview with Larissa Bohrer, for the Current Brazil Newspaper, this Tuesday (2).

In Jundiaí, for example, hundreds of couriers held two demonstrations to demand better working conditions. One on May 1st, Labor Day, and another on the 30th of the same month.

Social responsability

The director-president of the Ethos Institute, Caio Magri, points out that increasing the exploitation of workers as application deliverers is not part of the good practices of companies that have social responsibility.

“All companies have to permanently guarantee tests to diagnose covid-19, in addition to masks, gloves, alcohol gel, all the necessary protection to be able to work in these conditions. A fair, dignified remuneration that is proportional to the growth registered in your business, in short. It is not at all unreasonable and responsible, nor is it part of the social responsibility of a company, the possibility of exploiting its workers, while they are making exorbitant profits at that moment ”, he declared.

TVT shows second episode about Paulo Freire’s work and thought

São Paulo – TVT will air, starting at 9:00 pm this Saturday (16), in partnership with SescTV, the second in a series of five episodes of the documentary series “Paulo Freire – Um Homem no mundo”, directed by Cristiano Burlan. After “The Formation of Thought”, shown last Saturday (link below), it is the turn of “As 40 horas de Angicos”. The work shows the literacy experience carried out in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte. Alumni and teachers are interviewed. The program includes testimonials from Freire himself.

“Angicos has become an emblematic word for all those interested in popular education. The small town located in the hinterland of Rio Grande do Norte was the stage on which, for the first time, Paulo Freire, in early 1963, put into practice his famous method of adult literacy. In this way, the work, which until then was developed incipiently in Recife, gained great visibility at national and international levels ”, describes José Willington Germano, professor at the Department of Social Sciences at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN).

The episode, lasting 52 minutes, shows the construction of the experience since its beginning, when, in December 1962, a group of students, mostly university students, surveyed the vocabulary universe of the Angicos population. Soon after, these students, “radical Catholics”, according to Germano, created several Circles of Culture and, under the sponsorship of the government of Rio Grande do Norte and the “Alliance for Progress” (a program of North American origin), became community literacy possible.

“Getting the participants to learn to read and write and, moreover, to become politicized in 40 hours constituted the fundamental objectives of the experience. This aroused enormous curiosity, which is why the work of Freire and the students of Rio Grande do Norte traveled the world. In Angicos, observers, education specialists and journalists were present not only from the main media in Brazil, but also from abroad ”, adds the professor.

Centennial Series

The series also has the episodes “O exílio” (about the period lived by Paulo Freire in Switzerland after the 1964 coup), “From Pátio do Colégio to Pedagogia do Oprimido” (which addresses his return to Brazil) and “O mundo não it is, it is being ”(regarding the bases of the educator’s training). The musical group Cia do Tijolo and the singer and composer Chico César participate in the latter. In addition to Saturdays at 9 pm, the program will be aired by TVT on Sundays at 2pm.

Paulo Reglus Neves Freire would reach the centenary of his birth this year. He was born in Recife, on September 19, 1921. The patron of Brazilian education died on May 2, 1997, in São Paulo.
