ABC metalworkers discuss measures to keep worker at home

São Paulo – The ABC Metalworkers Union began talks with the assemblers’ unions (Sinfavea) and the auto parts industry (Sindipeças) to discuss measures to protect workers against the pandemic. The objective, according to the metalworkers, is to seek an emergency agreement “in defense of life and work”. That became even more urgent because of what the organization calls the “disregard” of the Jair Bolsonaro government.

“It is essential that workers remain in their homes, with their families, for the next few days”, informs the ABC São Paulo union. “It is also essential that the private sector supports the public health system and, in doing so, prevents an irremediable collapse. And the automotive industry has the capacity to lead this process in the low-income segment. ”

Well received

According to the president of the ABC Metalworkers Union, Wagner Santana, Wagnão, the proposal was well received. But employers said that in order to make the deal feasible, the government needs to come up with measures to pay salaries. “They welcomed the need to urgently unite all efforts and proposals that may contain the more aggressive advance of covid-19. The union defends total and severe isolation, which in order to be effective must be done in a general way. This requires a federal program to protect employment and income ”, noted Wagnão. The leader adds that the workers are going to talk to other economic sectors.

The ABC metalworkers’ proposals include isolation, vaccination, support to SUS and industrial and credit conversion programs. Regarding the immunization of workers, the idea is “to structure the shared acquisition of vaccines with the municipal health departments or public consortia, such as the Intermunicipal Grande ABC Consortium, as a way to accelerate the population’s immunization process”. Initially, the donation would go to the regional SUS.
